Rain, memories and samosa

Rain, memories and samosa

Rain, memories and samosa

A journal entry of a peaceful but thrilling saturday

A journal entry of a peaceful but thrilling saturday

A journal entry of a peaceful but thrilling saturday

Pat pat pat

the raindrops fell

all over the grim old earth

Lights in the streets

flickering in and out

just like my thoughts…

Today, I was completely drenched in the rain after a long time. As I grew older, I started bringing umbrellas and raincoats everywhere I went. Rain and wet laundry are now an inconvenience I do not want to deal with. I have never looked back.

Until today…

My brother was fumbling in his pockets to pay for all the occasion necessities we bought. It was for my sister's pre-wedding events. I don't think my family knows why we buy leaves and turmeric that won't ever be used again after the occasion but no one questions it. Neither do I.

I was rushing him because it was longer drizzling but pouring down on us. We took cover from the rain when I realised I was smiling. It had been a while since I was out in the world stuck in the rain with nothing to protect me from it.

While we waited, the train of thoughts that followed were merely instances and moments when I had been grateful to my little brother in the past.

It feels like yesterday when this cute toddler would warn me whenever dad was entering the house with his signature sounds. He made funny faces all the time and we named him cheeku because he had big round cheeks. He followed us around everywhere on all fours. This was no normal baby.

The baby was soon a toddler. My first ever cheesy vlog was of this weirdo. He was small and hyperactive. I was following him around commenting like an anchor while he performed random stuff. He ran around in his underwear and drove his indoor car. By the end, we had laughed and ran so much that we were breathless. He needed to be fed and bathed by someone and was good friends with all my friends.

and still is :p

This child was soon gone but in his place was a school-going kid with the most curious smile and sparkling eyes (because he was crying a lot :)). He would disturb me and beg me to play catch with him while I spent my time trying to crack the top ranks in school exams. I would shoo him away for moments of peace. But he came back every hour. He won all the games effortlessly and smiled humbly afterwards because he played for fun, not to win. He excelled at everything he tried.

Once, I was on my way home after a long day. I called to ask him to turn on the bedroom AC. I didn't have to ask again since ❤️. He was kind, innocent and his mom fed him all 3 meals while he watched cartoons.

The child is now a teenager who is just as ambitious and reserved as I was at his age. He is quieter than usual, moody, private and acts like an adult. Even though he fights back when people push him too hard, he is still the most treasured by the family among all of us. Everyone likes him almost immediately. I had to stop triggering wrestling matches with him because he is stronger than ever.

This teenager has a password for his WhatsApp, owns expensive gadgets and his anime collectibles are better than mine. He cooks delicious food but takes food back to his room so he can watch something on his laptop and eat (karma sure is the b-word).

He accompanies me wherever I ask him to and smiles from time to time.

The sound of thunder snapped me back to the present. The crowd had grown in size as more people pooled in looking for shelter. The rain slowed down a little so I turned to my brother and said "Let's take this chance and drive home now". He nodded because our house was just metres away.

We ran awkwardly to the scooty, careful not to trip on something in the rain. We were already half-drenched but there was no turning back now.

I drove with all my might, honking like a maniac. I could barely see the road as I turned the corner to our house, accelerating the whole time. Before I knew it, we were in the parking lot smiling from ear to ear.

It is tough to fight the temptation to eat samosas when it's pouring out.

After changing into dry clothes, we had a cup of coffee with samosa's and discussed who the killer could be in the "Only murders in the building" season 3. Shhhh, no spoilers!!

All in all, even though my brother is growing up faster than I want him to, I am very happy he exists in my life. The memories are truly infinite and warm.
